Ossian Sweet, the grandson of a slave, became a physician and moved to Detroit to practice medicine in the 1920s. As his practice and his family grew, Sweet and his family moved into a larger home in a white neighborhood where they faced discrimination. Ossian and his wife were accused of murder in the shooting a white neighbor. Historian Kevin Boyle documents the attempt to convict the Sweets and the NAACP's defense campaign.
