The first wholly electronic digital computer, ENIAC, was unveiled in 1946, and universities and the military soon began to explore the use of computers for advanced calculations as well as data storage. By the 1960s, computer use in the private sector was increasing rapidly. Companies such as Montgomery Ward began relying on computerized databases to store and track customer records and other data.
