Description
Filmed under the auspices of Colonial Williamsburg's Institute for Early American History and Culture, this classic drama relates the true story of Mary Silliman, whose husband, a Connecticut State's Attorney, was kidnapped in 1779 by Tories in revenge for his prosecution of two local Loyalists. Silliman fought tenaciously for her husband's release while confronting an array of public and personal challenges. The film has been widely acclaimed for its authentic portrayal of daily life in colonial America as well as its nuanced look at the impact of the Revolutionary War on families. Students will have many themes to discuss: Silliman's subversion of gender roles for colonial-era women, her religious dilemma about the morality of war, and the fact that this often-idealized turning point in American history was nearly as divisive as the Civil War to a nation still forging its identity.
